Bank of the West's eLearning Program

Project type

Training Program

Date

2004-2011

Location

San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA

In the late 2000s Bank of the West was facing pressure from its parent company, BNP Paribas, to significantly reduce T&E (Travel & Entertainment) expenses. All areas of the company were asked to propose ideas to help with this mandate. After seeing how much money the bank spent to fly internal training specialists and employees to live courses, plus to hire third-party vendors to conduct additional in-person training, I proposed a solution: pioneer the Bank's first online training program, consisting of eLearning modules employees could take anytime from their job location. My proposal was approved, so I wrote the RFP, managed the search for, and hired an LMS provider and an instructional design company. Then I conducted a needs assessment to identify areas across the organization that would benefit most from just-in-time training. I partnered with company leaders and IT experts to design the program structure: Compliance, Operations, Teller Training, and Financial Services. Over several years, I worked with SMEs and internal instructional designers to build 200+ training modules, and leveraged our third-party vendor to build another 300+ modules. I created the change management communications, developed the onboarding training, and managed the eLearning program until I was recruited by The Clorox Company.

Result: Within two years, the program achieved a 100% adoption rate across the organization and reduced training-related T&E costs. I received the Future Bank award for outstanding vision, achievement, and cost savings.
